Ordering Checklist
Ready to see your fleece transformed into premium-quality yarn?
Here's how to send fiber and place an order with Taos Valley Wool Mill.
- Fiber Preparation and Shipping
----We require that all fiber, even Llama and Alpaca, be scoured. (One exception is Angora bunny which does not usually require washing.) Please note that our equipment is not designed to remove vegetable matter either in scouring or subsequent dry processing. We will be adding combing soon which will remove vegetable matter. It also removes short fibers which may or may not be an advantage. We will post this announcement on our web page when it’s running
----Package your fiber in plastic bags, squeeze out all the air that you can, and then pack in cardboard boxes. Some of our customers use a vacuum to really suck the air out of their wool in the plastic bags. Label each bag to denote which "lot" it is. We keep lots separate unless instructed to blend. Numbers ("Lot 1", "Lot 2", etc.) are fine.
Clean Scoured Fiber:
------Ship all fiber for the same order at the same time- we can't schedule your job until the entire amount is here. Send fiber to our SHIPPING address. Note this is a NEW address as of April 1, 2006;

--If you are shipping fiber to a scouring service, have them send the scoured fleece to us at above address. Send processing instructions directly to TVWM. Do not ask scourer to pass them on. Pay scouring service directly.

----The same day you send your fleece, send us DIRECTLY your written instructions, sample yarn, and deposit. Please don't ask the scourer to pass it along with the fleece. Mail instructions while your fiber is off being scoured to our MAILING address:

--The linked order form (print out and mail in) is a guideline to show the choices you have for your yarn, and a way to ensure we have full instructions. We are a custom mill, and fully expect and desire to help you determine what you'd like, and make recommendations. Even if you are unsure of some specifications such as "yards per pound", using the questions on the order form as a basis for describing what you'd like is a great start.
--A 3-foot sample of yarn with some or all of the characteristics you'd like us to spin is VERY helpful. If you are unsure of your specifications, it is vital! The sample doesn't even have to be made of the same fiber as your yarn will be; we will be looking at it for its weight, diameter, twist, hand-whatever characteristics you want to duplicate.
--We have changed our deposit policy to reflect the following: We request a deposit only on jobs that you want us to scour. Until further notice that deposit would amount to $3.00 per pound for the greasy wool you send us. In other words, weigh the greasy wool you are shipping, calculate; XX pounds x $3.00=amount of check. Or you can send along a credit card authorization form and we'll bill your card for the deposit.
